Blog 7/23/2012

(Good Morning)!!

Well, i don't know if everyone is aware but the time difference here is 9 hours from central and 10 from mountain. This week has been kind of tough, i feel my Jet lag catching up to me. I was feeling really tired this week. And I don't think it helps that its been raining this whole week and all I want to do is curl up in bed and do nothing all day. i have a few pictures of the fun rain here in Nishny! Me and my companion had too much fun taking pictures. We have been quite busy getting around town to all the appointments. It can take about an hour for us to get from our home to the apartment of the member or investigator we are meeting. On Saturday we had a really funny inactive member, it took us an hour to get to her house and then she kept talking that we ended up being at her house for 3 hours it was ridiculous! So trying to get home before 9:30 was an adventure, we were 10 mins away when the district leader called to see why we hadn't called to say we were home. It was fun trying to tell him (hes a kinda awkward fella) but, we finally made it home and i'm pretty sure i have shin splints because of that day! Well enough of my pains! This city is so pretty i went in my first Russian Orthodox church and there are just so many around the city! We have been teaching this investigator whose name is Eva she is so sweet and this week we met again and we asked her if she prayed the way we taught her and if she felt something or what was her experience. She said she tried it and she felt warm inside and like if all her worries were gone and she was just feeling peaceful! That was a really cool experience. Were going to teach her about the Restoration this week! I'm so excited. We found another person who was meeting with the missionaries a while ago but then i think she either misunderstood the Elders or they didn't explain correctly but, she thought our church though God and Jesus are the same person. We explained we don't think that and she said she was really interested in knowing more because she agrees with everything we teach but that was the only thing. So we hope that will be a good one. OK funny story of the week! So I don't know why but we have talked to a lot of people that have been drinking lately. They come up to us. Well, everyone here in Russia is either always drinking or smoking, its gross when you are walking down the street and you just walk into a big cloud of smoke!! So this week alone we have had about 6 people try to convince my companion (i cant understand what they are saying) to stop being a missionary and just marry them, or date them or whatever. i think we got about another 4 invitations to go and drink with a group of guys. It's just ridiculous! it's funny cause some are actually interested but i don't think they would talk to us if they were sober. But, every night we call the elders with new contacts, we have given them about 1-2 every night! It's really good though cause something might come out of that! But, Elder Barker said today that he has never received this many contacts, he's lucky if he gets about 3 in a transfer (6 weeks). Well i must go but I love everyone and hope everyone is doing well.

ps. oh one more thing that I love here, that is really funny! So everyone loves to drink tea here. So the first week i went to an inactive investigators home and she gave us boiling hot tea even though outside it was like 92 degrees! so i had to drink it hot, and then (this one was way fun) at church after Relief Society, the sisters got together and had a little tea party with mini sandwiches and cookies! it was soo cute! i love it and will probably be bringing that tradition back with me! :)

Voy a extrañar a Elder Wittmore y Elder Christensen.

Llegamos a nuestro apartamento y durmimos!

Hey everyone so I finally made it safe and sound to Russia (for those of you that were wondering). Well I'm here just trying to get the hang of things! But I have had a really eventful week so here it goes. It all started on Monday July 9th (which was tues in Russia, ah this is weird) anyway so left the MTC on Monday of course I got done with the water works on Sunday :( it was sad leaving our district, being with them for so long has made us like a mini family and I miss them like crazy! Well, so we left and we had about 15 missionaries traveling to Russia together, we had a flight from salt lake to new York and then one from new York to Moscow. So I got to call my family on Monday morning and we had a nice long chat, then I boarded for new York. It was way fun cause I sat next to a man on the plane who wasn't a member so obviously I talked to him about the church. He seemed interested and I gave him a pass along card. Then when we got to new York we ran to catch our Moscow plane, this time I had a seat by missionaries so I didn't get to talk to people, but thanks to my cough medicine (yes I was sick) I slept the whole 8 hour plane ride so that was a huge blessing cause I knew I would die without anything to do. You all know me and how I'm kinda ADD so I need things to do and all I was able to do was read...so... Anyway made it Moscow and oh boy first time off the plane I could feel that humidity! It was soooo humid! Well we went through passport control and the lady started speaking russian to me all I said was "sorry I don't understand much, I can speak a little" she looked at me and chuckled! Oh boy I wasn't at the MTC anymore. We got our bags and headed out to meet our mission president and his wife and the assistants! They greeted us and now the time had come for us to leave our other Russian friends who were serving in samara. I cried again, and it made me think of how in the book of Mormon Ammon leaves his brothers but he knows that it's for the best and he trusts in god that he will see them at the end of his mission. Im going to miss Elder Wittmore and Christensen, they were really great. I have come to realize i am such a cry baby! Well we then went to the mission home and rested, let me tell everyone jet lag is a real thing. We then went to bed and I woke up at 4am the next day cause I couldn't sleep anymore (oh btw it's wed now) yes we lost a few hours so I travelled into the future! Next day we went to the office for training and then back to the mission home cause on thurs we were going to go contacting at read square. Thurs we rode the metro to the church and went contacting, it was fun but tough cause of my broken Russian. I did meet a man from Argentina and I talked to him in spanish! How cool was that! Well after that we met our trainer, mine is Sister Jolley she is really nice and jolly heheh :) so we had a train ride to go to Nishny so we left with elder Olsen and Wittmore, not the one from the MTC but his brother it was so weird but so cool cause they are so alike! We were on the train for 4 hours and I felt like the part on Anastasia when she is on the train! Well so we got to Nishny and well it reminds me of Mexico City. We got to our apartment and slept! Next day was Friday and we went to some lessons we had and it's incredible how much I can understand, my trainer says I'm doing really good. Well so we then had a lesson with this lady who is inactive but her son is serving a mission so we had a lesson with her. And she cried! That's always a good sign that they felt the spirit. Well sat we did an English lesson with a girl named Eva and after the English lesson we did a spiritual thought, we committed her to pray like we do. After that meeting we were walking home and met Alexander. we were trying to save a baby bird and he came over and helped us, imagine a big Russian man with a big deep voice holding this tiny baby bird and then he is stroking his head. It was cute so he asked about English club and we took down his info and gave him our flyer. We didn't think much would come out of it but I told sister Jolley I can see him as a member of our church. Sunday we went to church and I forgot my name tag, great way to start but anyway so I met the members and everyone asked where I was from, when I told them they were so surprised they had never met a Mexican before! People are really surprised by that. One lady asked me if I was from Kasaghstan I said no, and said Mexico, she got so excited when I told her it was my 4th day she went around showing me off and said oh you are an angel you are so beautiful this little angel. It was funny (she was our eternal investigator) well so after church we went trackting and while on the bus we got a call from Alexander who said when was church we explain it was earlier in the morning and so it was over and he asked when it was next Sunday cause he wanted to go with us. We were so excited we told him and he said bye! Sooo cool we were soo happy. And that's a fast summary of our week pretty good and lots to do we have a goal of 4 contacts a day which means 100 in a month which means approx 1 baptism a month! Miss everyone at home!

Semana 11

laura.tedford@myldsmail.net

Week 11

Wow how the time has passed us by! i've already been here in the MTC for 11 weeks! wow ok im ready to head out to Russia! oh I almost forgot! HAPPY 4TH OF JULY EVERYONE! I was thinking about what I was doing 1 year ago and it seems like it was yesterday! Last year for fourth of july Matice my beautiful ex-roomate invited all of the roommates down to Provo to be with her family and to go to 7 Peaks! Yep i remember that day cause i got a major sunburn! hahah but it was a really fun day and we had a ton of great food and saw some fireworks and we saw Darth Vader! It was a way fun week! Its ironic that this time around im celebrating the day of independence by getting ready to leave for Russia! (we do have a devotional going on today in celebration) but mainly im focusing on packing and getting everything done before i head out on monday! I have to get all packed up and ready to go today because its the only day ill have time but my branch president said to be packed and living out of your suitcase by tommorrow!
This week was really fun for the sunday devotional. We had a man who was dress up as Brother Richard a man that was in the room in carthage where Joseph Smith was murdered. He was the one that didnt get hit once with a bullet! He acted like him and told his story, he also told about the murder of Joseph Smith and all of the historical events that had happened. It was soo good and at the end we sang praise to the man and all of the missionaries stood up and the spirit was soooo strong! it was just a wonderful devotional! Really my testimony of Joseph Smith just6 grew like 4x the amount it already was!

Im so excited to head out to Russia finally! Something funny that i found out this week is that in Russia I have to carry my passport with me at all times because over there the police can stop you and ask for your passport and visa! My branch president who used to be the mission president there in moscow said they do a lot of racial profiling in russia so i will most deffinately get stopped more then everyone else because im darker! Luis Tobias got put in jail so maybe thats the fate that awaits me as well! im excited though (almost kind of hope it happens) Im a tough lady! And what a great mission story it would be! Im really excited to finally get out there and preach the gospel!
ILL BE FLYING OUT AT 8:30AM ON MONDAY JULY 9TH AND ARRIVING THERE AT 10:00AM ON JULY 10TH! its a whole days! :( ill be on the New york to Moscow Flight for about 15-18 hours! :s
THERE IS A 10 HOUR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UTAH AND MOSCOW!

well thats it for this week! I love everyone and ill try to get the letters out that i need and havent responded, sorry about that but EVERYONE PLEASE SEND ME YOUR EMAILS TO:

laura.tedford@myldsmail.net

cause you wont be able to send me letters unless you send them to russia!
Thanks to everyone for their letters,

Semana 10

Week 10

Hey Everyone,

Wow I can't believe this time has gone by so fast. Im already at week 10 which means about 2 more weeks to go ( I leave July 9th). So if you are sending packages, letters, cookies ( ;) ) then send them now because I dont want to miss them. So this week we had a wonderful opportunity. First of all I hosted the new sisters that came in last week, I helped them come in and get their stuff in their room and then get their books. My friend Atiana came in and im so excited because shes here. We also had the opportunity to hear from an apostle yesterday. Ok let me back up. So this week is Mission President training so all 110 mission president couples are here and are being trained by the first presidency and the 12 apostles! How great of an experience is that! So the meal lines have been a little crowded but i dont complain cause yesterday we had 10 out of 12 of the apostles at our devotional! It was so awesome we had: holland, cook, nelson, bednar, andersen, christoffersen, perry, (and four others who i cant remember. dont worry i wrote them down) but it was so good. The devotional was about a presentation them are giving the media because of the election coming up and everything, and its a wonderful summary of our church and our values. I seriously could feel the Holy Ghost in that meeting, even though he was giving statistics! But I know this church is the true church of God and i know that he loves each of us and knows each of our names. He loves and cares for us. I have had the greatest experience just being here at the MTC (yes the companion is rough) but I have seen god answer my prayers, even the tiny ones! thanks for the wonderful letters and I really enjoy them! Keep them coming! (until july 9th) And NO dearelder.com is not guarded by the CIA or anything! :) love everyone and hope everything is well at home.

Semana 8

Semana 8

SIGUELOS ENVIANDO PORFAVOR! Enserio si he estado haciendo mejor.

¡Me encanta!

Amor,

Week 8

Hello my fellow americans (and mexicans):

This week im only writing a little because of lack of time and also the request from my family to write in more detail. This week has been a great week and i've really learned a lot. I got an amazing quote from another sister in my zone but i forgot it in my residence hall so whoops sorry next week! We got new missionaries last week and they are all just really great. I FINALLY MEMORIZED THE FIRST VISION IN RUSSIAN! that was my accomplishment of this week and im almost done with the purpose in Russian. Many have asked me how the food is because they heard its really good at the MTC.... let me just tell you that because i dont eat i've lost weight! Nothing beats a home cooked meal (especially my mom's food) and I just want to leave you with a little thought! Love your family and tell them you love them everyday, cause there will come a day when you wont be able to say I Love You! Although I can't be with my family right now, I know its only temporary but i hope that you all are appreciating your parents. Read your scriptures everyday, i dont know how much comfort i have recieved from them while i've been here. I know that Heavenly Father loves us and he sends us comfort through the scriptures. I love each of you and hope you are having a great Summer!

PS. Palmyra if you are reading this please send me your address Via Dear Elder because I want to write you back! :)

Week 7

Ok this last week has been so wierd. The other 2 districts left and now we have been alone with the other zone for about a week and a half. It's interesting because we all got to know each other better but at the same time we're ready for new people. Today the new kids are coming, we're really excited, we're getting 2 new sisters in our room because we only have 4 right now and 2 empty beds. Last week on Friday I got the opportunity to attend a live session at the the Salt Lake Temple, because i'm "international missionary" I got to see Maritza Rodriguez from Laredo. She was my tour guide, and we had a nice little chat. The live session was beautiful and pretty fun! It was a good week this week except for a few things. Me and my comp. got in a fight. we had a great companionship inventory and i let her know that i like people to be straight up with me and not beat around the bush. It's been a lot better. This week i've been thinking a lot about the atonement, and on Sunday we had a great "testimony meeting" with my district and we all talked about our thoughts on the atonement. It made me realized the great sacrifice that Jesus Christ went through for me, but at the same time, the mercy he brought into the equation. I'm so happy that i'm able to be with my district here and they are exactly what I need. I'm especially thankful for the Elder that sits next to me, he is just my rock in all of this. He goes to BYU-I so i'm excited to see him in Idaho! I hope everyone at home is doing great. Thanks to Jennifer Trevino, i got your letter I hope i just have enough time to get a little something sent to you. Im thankful for all the people writing and i hope everyone at home is alright. Remember "Pray always that you may come off conqorer"!

Love,

ps. I got my Russian tag this week and it looks sick! :)

Week 6

Aww I can't stand the heat:

For those who are not aware, the weather in Utah is rising. Im so glad the lord called me to serve in Russia because If i got called to Africa or somewhere hot i would probably contact inside of stores with air conditioning (jk hahah i would work hard). Anyway so today is the half way mark of my 12 week adventure at the MTC. I'm excited because this week the older district left to the Baltics, Russia, and Ukraine and I was just imaging the feelings i would have if i was leaving now. It''s amazing to think of how quickly we have learned this language. Im literally going in and TEACHING lessons in Russian, and i understand what they say. Its great how with the help of the Holy Ghost we can do so much more. And a thought that came into my head this week was if I am worthy of the Holy Ghost at all times, I will be able to accomplish anything that is good and that the Lord approves of. I heard a story that government officials from the FBI and the CIA have been here before and are trying to figure out how it is that we learn the language so quickly, They think they have the system set up just right and they analyze our programs and everything but they forget a very important component: the Holy Ghost. We had the opportunity to hear from W. Craig Zwick from the 70 last night. It was a great experience he told us about his time on his mission and a few thoughts came to my mind. He told a story about being at the hospital and writing his testimony in each BOM and putting a picture of his family in. He then said that a person 20 years later showed him that very book of mormon and explained that he was converted because of his testimony. I had the thought that the Lord sends his servants to deliver his messages. So each and everyone of us need to be worthy to let the Lord speak through us. Another missionary in my district said that that missionary could have just slept while at the hospital but he worked, and we need to "work while others would sleep'' and the thought that came to my mind was that we should never pass up an opportunity to do good. Preach the gospel at all times either by your words or your works. I know that this gospel is true and I love the book of mormon, i have found comfort in it these past weeks and i find new things i never saw there before. I hope everyone has the opportunity to help someone else come unto christ. I say this in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Love

Week 5

Week 5:

Wow,

That really went by sooo fast! ok so not much has happened! Things are starting to settle down and i think i have the rythmn down now! hahah! Im so thankful for all the letters i received this week! Thanks to Matice, Jessica Meyers,Marianna, Allison, and My adorable cousin Jared, I can keep myslef sane! Hahah jk they were fun. I also loved "the akward moment when..." letters Emily sent! KEEP THEM COMING GUYS! I really have been doing better. Im teaching a lesson in Russian everyday, except sundays! but im really starting to warm up to the language i just need more vocabulary! On Monday the older district is leaving so that means we become the older district which is weird to think about. We only have about 6 more weeks and then I'm off to Russia. I learned this week that Moscow mission and the Moscow West mission are combining so i might get to serve in other countries besides Russia! Thats cool. I am grateful for the scriptures and the revelation i receive each day. I seriously look forward to my personal study time cause the Lord always helps me find what i need. Two weeks ago he sent me Alma 17 for comfort and it was just the best i read vs. 5, 9-10 and those just gave me a testimony that a mission isnt just a piece of cake but i can do it. Thanks to everyone back home and i want those letters! :)

Love,

CECTPA TEDFORD

Week 4

So this week is week four! Man it's gone by soo fast! It's been a good week! I've learned that my favorite days of the week are Tues, Wed and Sundays! because we have devotionals on those days! I love it! Yesterday we had the previlage of listening to Elder L. Tom Perry! He was soo good and so sweet! well let me start from last thurs! Things are going ok here, to all those getting ready to go on a mission, remember that probably the hardest thing will be companions! its hard to be with someone 24/7 no place to escape! but after a while you will get used to it! im still having a hard time because before i could find a place to go and no one would bother me, but now.... lets just say its harsh! We are still teaching "investigators" almost every day except sundays! today we get to do something called TRC which people from the "outside" world come in and volunteer to be our investigators, its a ton of fun and a relief from our regular investigators. Our teacher Brat (Brother) Porter left to Arizona on saturday. it was so sad i think we all cried he was the most hilarious human being on the planet of the earth, oh well that's not counting Elder Bradford hes like the class clown! (even has the red hair to go with it). I feel like im starting to get a hang of this language now, there are these things called cases that let you know more about the sentence since russian doesnt have filler words like so, it, to etc. so you change the end of the words to end with a different letter and it changes the meaning of the sentence. so i feel a little more confident with those! I LEARNED THE NUMBERS AND FIRST PART OF THE FIRST VISION IN RUSSIAN THIS WEEK! I cant believe we only have like 9 weeks left! its incredible. The older group is leaving so, we become the older group next week. Wierd! but idk i know ill get a general idea of this language soon! Today I was able to go to the Xram(temple) and it was just a great feeling of peace! I see Elder Hurtado (shelem) a lot! im actually going to go help with pronounciation right now! well hope everyone back in the real world is doing good! dont forget to WRITE ME! my PO BOX # is 122!

Love,
CECTPA TEDFORD

Week 2

Hey Guys:

So I made it through the second week. Its a lot better. Thank goodness for companionship inventory! We just talked about all the things that were bothering us and the things that were also just a misunderstanding. But its a lot better now! we are both more understanding and patient. so guess what, Shelem is here! the one that was at the Benemerito and is going to New York. i see him here all the time.
oh you guys should watch the new bible videos on lds.org they are really good. its christ's life. i dont know if i told you but while im at the mtc i cant email pictures. i sent aunt sara some that i printed you can talk to her about getting those. PLEASE SEND DEAR ELDERS I DONT HAVE TIME TO READ EMAILS! Please also put my address on facebook so that people can mail me letters or use dearelder.com. if you want to tell me something you have until tues afternoon and i will reply to that via email wed afternoon.

Yesterday we had Elder D. Todd Christofferson talk to us for Devotional and it was really good. After devo we all go into our district rooms and talk about what we heard and what impressions we got. I love my district they are all really great and they all have a really strong testimony of the gospel. The Elders are really nice and they seem like they are older but we always laugh at how funny it is that we (the sisters) are older. But yesterday during district meeting they were all baring their testimony and Elder Samuelson said something interesting. (not that other people dont) but he said that we were chosen to come to Russia because we already have a strong testimony of the gospel and we can concentrate more on just learning the language and were not here to gain a testimony.

I dont know if i told you guys but the first day that i was here i was in a room with all the international kids and since i knew English they made me translate for the other kids that spoke spanish. I sat in the back with some kids from mexico and a kid from Honduras. It was a lot of fun and then they had to test out our language skills so they were interviewing each person and when it was my turn the guy said "oh ive been listening to you talk we dont need to interview you" it was funny and then he asked me how i know so much spanish. its always fun to tell people yeh im from mexico city and then they wonder why my english is so good and then they are amazed that im learning a third language and going to Russia. It's nice here at the MTC especially for the gym time. I started playing this new game called four square and its HILARIOUS! i love it because it gets sooo intense. And then on sundays we have the opportunity to go to music and the spoken word, the later in the day we have a temple walk with our district and then at night a devotional and a film like joseph smith: restoration, or legacy.

This sunday i learned something really interesting, did you know that in Moscow there are a lot of spanish speaking people, and because of that they almost opened a spanish branch? its soo cool. my district president was in mocow, and hes the one i heard on mormon.org his name is President cranney and him and his wife are just awesome. I really enjoy their company and they have a great spirit but they were the ones that told me that and it made me think... thats why im going to moscow! :)

I miss you guys a lot and i hope you are all doing well. I pray for you guys every night!

Love you,

Week 1

Hey guys so i made it throug the first week at the MTC. I thought the Mission was going to be easy oh did i not get the memo or something because it is some tough stuff. I wake up everyday around 6 or 6:30 and just go go go from there. Russian is hard but i can already say my testimony in russian and pretty much teach. I understand about 40% of what the investigator is telling me and i can respond about 30% hahah key is to use main words. So to everyone that is thinking of serving a mission i just want you to know that its hard but i have been praying and attending the temple and the Lord lets me know it will get easier. I encourage you all to put in your papers and the lord will never condemn you for serving a mission. Thanks so much for your love and thanks for your support.

SEND DEAR ELDERS

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

Wow! 6 days to go! :)

I promised before that i was going to tell you guys how i decided that i wanted to go on a mission. well here it is:

Life was going great but I felt like I had hit a wall! I had a job and it was great I was having fun and making good money, my grades were getting better and I was getting over my school slump that I was in. Then one day it started to hit me. I was sitting alone in my apartment watching conference Oct 2011 and it seemed like everything was talking about Missionary Work. At that moment I was completely against going on a mission. I thought that it was just for those women that didn't get married. At that moment I completely threw the idea out of my head. I had a few other small instances where I felt that i should be going on a mission but I always said no... I didn't want to go on a mission and I was completely blocking that idea from my mind. Then one day I was sitting in sacrament meeting and there were really great talks being given! Again I got the feeling that I should be going on a mission or I will miss out on a great opportunity. I felt like god was telling me it was my decision, but he wasn't going to be able to"ok heavenly father i'll go on a mission" For the closing hymn we started signing "i'll go where you want me to go" and I just broke down crying! My roommate asked me why I was crying and I just turned and told her, "it's cause I don't want to go on a mission". She laughed and gave me a hug. Of course now i'm really excited but it's funny how our heavenly father has things planned for us, even though we ourselves don't know yet. I'm so grateful for the gospel and the blessings it's brought to my life, and i'm excited to share it with the people of Russia!

I've been reading up on what to expect at the MTC and what my schedule will be like and I ran into this. Let me know if it's not accurate!

I can't believe in just 15 days ill be at the MTC! I don't know how i'll do with the language! :s Russian seems soo hard!

Does anyone have any tips for me? What should I do before I leave on my mission? How to prepare?

Sunday, April 8, 2012

Hey Guys:

I started this blog so that i can keep you all informed on what is going on during my mission! I will be leaving for the MTC (Missionary Training Center) on April 24th! That's only 16 days away! I can't believe the time has finally come! I am nervous and excited at the same time! The funny thing is, i've been away from BYU-I for about 3 months already, and I am barely feeling the "I miss it so much I can cry" feeling! I think it's somehow also linked to the mission nervousness!

I am so thankful to our heavenly father for the opportunity to let me serve the people of Russia! Let me tell you a little bit about how I received my mission call. I had just returned from a long day out with my cousins (we had gone to this theme park called "Chapultepec Majico") I was exhausted, and as usual I logged on to Facebook, I then noticed that I had a few E-mails. I opened up my E-mails and started reading them all. The last one was an email that said "Sister Tedford, Congratulations on your new assignment. We are happy to have you in our mission, here is a welcome packet that will give you helpful information about the Moscow, Russia Mission." I was in a bit of a shock, a lot of things ran through my head at that moment, and one of them was that someone was playing a joke on me. I slowly stood up and got my parents attention. I told my dad "um, dad what is this" I showed him the E-mail and he started flipping out. He started saying someone was joking with me, and he started to pace back and forth not knowing what to do. I checked the E-mail address it had been sent from and it was a @ldschurch.org address. My mom was really excited, but my dad could not believe his eyes. He ran into his office and turned on Skype and CALLED RUSSIA! Luckily the hour difference is of 9 hours so it was 9 AM there. He got in touch with the mission president's secretary, she told my dad that yes, I would be serving in Moscow, Russia. Our whole family was so surprised and we said a prayer and thanked heavenly father for this great blessing. Later I received my actual call, but i already knew haha.

I'm grateful for the opportunity and for the blessings from Heavenly Father.

Ps. Next time i'll tell you why I decided to go on my mission!

<3 Laura
